The 22 year-old Sheffield left-hander, a former North of England stroke play champion and winner of the Hampshire Salver in 2019, had nine birdies in a course-record 63 and followed up with a 69 to finish on 12 under par.
The England’s men’s squad member said: “I can’t really believe it to be honest. I had four good weeks up in Scotland playing a lot of links courses and to come back to another felt like second nature.
“It’s going to be amazing to be in The Open. To play in it will be an absolute honour – definitely at the top of my career so far.”
He started playing aged 12 at a driving range, where a Hallowes club member spotted him and suggested he join.
