The son of Debbie and Blaine Morikawa, Morikawa graduated from La Cañada High School de La Cañada in Flintridge, California, in Los Angeles County . He played college golf at the University of California, Berkeley from 2015 to 2019, winning it five times, including the 2019 Pac-12 Championship. in addition to his college wins, he won the Western Junior , Trans-Mississippi Amateur , Sunnehanna Amateur, and Northeast Amateur . he played on the winning Arnold Palmer Cup team of 2017 and the 2018 winning Walker Cup team of 2017 and the Eisenhower Trophy team of 2018 that finished with a stroke of seconds. in May 2018, he spent three weeks as the top-ranked golfer in the World Amateur Golf Rankings . Morikawa graduated from the University of California , Berkeley in 2019 with a degree in business administration.

Morikawa made his professional debut at the 2019 RBC Canadian Open, where he finished 14th. he shared the line. On July 12, 2020, Morikawa defeated Justin Thomas in a playoff to win his second PGA Tour title at the Workday Charity Open . The win was the first non-alternate PGA Tour victory for him. Morikawa rebounded from a three-stroke deficit with three holes remaining and made a 25-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to stay alive, before winning with a par on the third playoff hole.

On August 9, 2020, Morikawa won the 2020 PGA Championship, winning a major in only his second major championship start. his final round of 64 tied the lowest final round score ever scored by a PGA champion who matched Steve Elkington at the 1995 PGA Championship . Morikawa became the third youngest golfer to win a PGA Championship when he won the event at the age of 23 with this win. Morikawa also became the fourth golfer to win the PGA Championship before turning 24.

On February 28, 2021, Morikawa won the 2021 WGC-Work Day Championship at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida . Morikawa won by a margin of three strokes over Billy Horschel , Viktor Hovland and Brooks Koepka .
