Sam Choi

Sam Choi, a sophomore on the University of New Mexico’s men’s golf team, has been named to the 2020 Arnold Palmer Cup International Team. Choi has had a terrific year already notching three top-5 finishes including a win at the John Burns Intercollegiate.

The Arnold Palmer Cup is slated for July 3-5, 2020 at Lahinch Golf Club in Ireland. According to the Palmer Cup website, it is not certain whether the event will be held as scheduled, postponed, or canceled.

“With the pandemic affecting so many lives around the globe, there are certainly more pressing issues than golf. However, we would like to recognize the accomplishments of these college golfers since last summer and during this college season,” according to Palmer Cup officials.

A month ago Sam Choi nearly won a big junior tournament at the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club. What Choi learned that week helped him win a bigger tournament Sunday on the same course.

Choi, 17, became the youngest winner in the 118-year history of the Southern California Golf Association Amateur Championship Sunday, pulling away to a five-shot victory on another hot and humid day in the Coachella Valley.

Choi’s dominating performance in the event included breaking 70 in all four rounds of the championship. He finished Sunday with a 4-under 68 for a 17-under 271 total. Choi’s win came just one month after he finished third on the Shore Course in the 54-hole American Junior Golf Association event on the layout.
